Electronic access control systems help manage entry into and out of a property, room, building, drawer, file cabinet, or other areas containing proprietary or sensitive information, data, or assets. Such systems provide quick, convenient access to authorized persons, while restricting access to unauthorized people. Electronic access control systems vary widely in complexity and types.

One commonly used type is the electronic card access control system, which generally contains the following components.

Access Control Field Panels: Also known as intelligent controllers, these components are installed in every building where access control is to be implemented. Electric lock hardware, card readers, and several other access control devices are all connected to these panels.

Electronic Lock Hardware: This component unlocks and locks doors or other entrances controlled by the access control system. Electromagnetic locks, electric exit devices, and electric strikes are commonly used electronic lock hardware.

Card Readers: Electronically used to read access cards, card readers can either be of the proximity or insertion type. Often, they are mounted on the non-secure side of the controlled door.

Access cards: These are used to gain entry and sometimes exit from secured areas. Often, access cards are the same size as standard bank credit cards and can be easily kept in a purse or wallet.

Access Control Keypads: Sometimes used to replace or complement access cards, these components allow access to secured areas via the correct pass code.
